Unveiling the Secrets of Brake Seals for Brake Fluids

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used in the hydraulic brake and clutch systems of vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, light trucks, and even some bicycles. It acts as a medium for transferring force applied to the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure within the brake system, enhancing braking efficiency. This function relies on the property of the fluid being incompressible.

There are three main types of brake fluids, each compatible with different types of rubber seals:

1. Glycol-Based Brake Fluids : Recommended for use with NR, SBR, and EPDM rubber seals.

2. Silicone-Based Brake Fluids : Compatible with various rubber seals depending on the operating temperature:
o Up to 100oC : NR, SBR, NBR, CR rubber seals are recommended.
o Up to 150oC : EPDM, HNBR rubber seals are recommended.
o Up to 200oC : Viton rubber seals are recommended.

3. Petroleum-Based Brake Fluids : Recommended for use with NBR rubber seals.

Understanding the secrets of choosing the right rubber seals for each type of brake fluid helps prevent issues like swelling and premature deterioration of the seals. This knowledge ensures that you can use rubber seals efficiently, extending their lifespan and maximizing their value.
